Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
