Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
